UAW compete in the ‘Oarsome Project’ inter-school rowing competition - 05/02/2018

On Thursday 1st February 2018, Year 9 and 10 students represented University Academy Warrington by competing in an indoor rowing competition against a host of other secondary schools from across Warrington. The project is a collaboration between the Warrington School Sports Partnership (WSSP), British Rowing and the Warrington Rowing Club, aimed at introducing young people to the sport.

The inter-school competition was the perfect opportunity to bring all of the schools together who are taking part in the project this year and students thrived on the sporting rivalry between the schools.

Year 9 Academy students took part in the four-minute individual sprint while Year 10 students were entered in the more demanding five-minute race. Each year group also formed a relay team to try and beat the times of other competing schools. The girls’ relay team performed exceptionally and were only just pipped at the post for the bronze medal while the boys’ relay team finished in second place to claim the silver medal.

Mr Taylor is a Learning Coach at the Academy and provides the link between the school and the Warrington Rowing Club. Mr Taylor said: “The indoor rowing competition was a great showcase for the dedication and commitment that our students have shown to the project so far this year. It was great to see their efforts rewarded with a place on the podium for the boy’s relay team, with the girls only narrowly missing out on a bronze medal. I’m confident they will do even better in the Summer Regatta, which is out on the water.”

Jack Sanders, representing the Year 9 rowing team, said: “The competition was really exciting and made all of our hard work so far this year worthwhile. We were all exhausted afterwards!”
