UAW students and staff support local pensioners’ annual Christmas meal - 21/12/2017

Students from University Academy Warrington (UAW) have been helping out at the school’s annual Christmas meal for local pensioners.

The event, which also includes light entertainment, is held annually in the UAW canteen, in collaboration with the school’s Recreation Centre, to bring those in the local community together for Christmas.

Academy students support the event in various ways, from wrapping presents, writing cards, setting up the venue, serving the meal and interacting with the guests. Accompanied by the UAW choir, the school’s orchestra were outstanding in creating a wonderful festive atmosphere, by playing a selection of Christmas carols. Afterwards, students provided the calling for a game of bingo.

Misia Barclay, Principal at the Academy, said “The comments from visitors as they departed were extremely positive and they all expressed how proud the Academy should be of its students as they were all extremely polite and respectful throughout.”

Sam, a student at the Academy, said “We have really enjoyed today, it’s been great to do something to help people in our community get together and celebrate Christmas.”

Dawn Walker, Manager of the Recreation Centre, said “It has been wonderful to see young students engage with older people in the community and to watch how mature and sensible they are when chatting to them. Our thanks go to the Co-op, who have been extremely generous once again in supplying the food for the event, and our canteen staff have worked very hard in preparing and cooking the lovely meal.”

One of the guests made a short speech at the end of the meal saying “We really do appreciate it all. The meal was absolutely lovely and it is wonderful when the young and old get together to share and listen to the carols and really understand what Christmas is all about.”
