Year 8 Maths Students Visit Haydock Park racecourse - 28/11/2017

On Friday 20th October a group of Year 8 maths students from University Academy Warrington were taken to experience race day at Haydock Park Racecourse with the aim of exploring how, and when, we use mathematics in everyday life.

Students were treated to a VIP experience at the racecourse where they were taken into numerous backstage settings and given a rare glimpse into the world of horse racing. During the tour they visited the weighing room and shown the vigorous preparation a jockey will through before a race. They were then able to visit the “inner sanctum” that is the jockey’s changing room, go out onto the track, investigate the winners’ enclosure, the starting gates, stables and the final furlong.

Throughout the day students were shown how important mathematics was to various aspects of horse racing. They made use of averages, conversion, estimation, measurement and financial mathematics while taking part in the various activities.

Mrs Matthews, Teacher of Maths at University Academy Warrington, said: “I really enjoyed the day, I feel like I learned a lot about horses and it was good for our students to see mathematics in action. I would definitely bring them again. We would all like to thank Haydock Park Racecourse for their kind hospitality.”

Mr Mercer, Teacher of Maths, also commented: “The students really bought into the activities and even some of those who said they hated mathematics at the start were mad keen to get involved in the mathematical side of the activities. I feel they all got something positive out of the experience.”

Sam, Year 8 student at UAW, finished: “I had a great time. I loved hearing all about the jockeys and horses, and feel really lucky at how much we got to see behind the scenes.”
