Reading Buddies Success - 02/05/2017

Throughout each week we run Reading Buddies workshops with Year 7 students who team up with a students from Year 9 or 10. The Year 7 students attend once a week during form time and read to their buddy. After every session we fill in their Reading Passport, documenting their progress. Then, at the end of each term, we then enter all the students into a prize draw to win a book voucher!

After only six months since starting the Reading Buddies workshop here at UAW, five of our Year 7 students have graduated and after retesting they now have a reading age of twelve or over!

The graduates are: Hannah Needs, Olivia Gingell, Nikita Smallbone ,Jamie Stocker, Emily Fitzsimmons.

We are so pleased that this intervention is having such a positive impact on the students and can’t wait to give out more graduation certificates in the future!

Miss Johnson commented: “Reading Buddies is such a lovely environment, the students all get along really well and it is great to see the different year groups interacting. The Year 9 and 10 reading buddies become positive role models for the Year 7’s and a point of call if they need any help or support.”

Hannah Needs (Y7 Reading Buddies Graduate) said: “Reading buddies has really helped to boost my confidence with reading and my buddy Sasha was great at giving me positive feedback at the end of each session.”
